The Regional Cosplay Championships at Anime Festival Asia 09 is now accepting entries! I talked about AFA 09 in a previous post, and now they’ve released the details!

From Figure.fm:

What
AFA09 will host the first ever Regional Cosplay Championship in Asia. The top cosplay team from each participating South East Asian country will be sponsored by AFA09 to compete in the Regional Cosplay Championship during the two-day anime festival where they will perform and be judged by a panel of distinguished guests from Japan including internationally renowned cosplayer Kaname☆ who is best known for portraying Cloud Strife from “Final Fantasy VIl: Advent Children” and Ichigo Kurosaki from “Bleach”.

At AFA 2009 Kaname☆ will also conduct a close-door panel session for cosplayers keen to learn more about how to improve their cosplay techniques.

How
All you have to do to participate is to signup on figure.fm and post photos of yourself in cosplay gear. Please post multiple photos in a single post. Categorize your entry under “Cosplay” and tag your entry “afa_cosplay.”
Please also include the following details in the post for each team member:-

Name
Age
Gender
Nationality
Favorite anime or game characters that you like to cosplay as
How many years you have been cosplaying as

Rules
Please include the name of the character being cosplayed and include links as a reference.
Each cosplay team represented will consist of 2 members only (Similar to submissions for World Cosplay Summit)

The countries applicable are (In no particular order) Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Only one representative Cosplay team will be selected from each particular country, with the exception of Singapore, where the event will be hosted.
Judging for the finalists will be done internally by the Anime Festival Asia Cosplay Committee and their decision will be final.
Finalists are required to perform on stage at AFA in Singapore for at most 5 minutes on either November 21st or 22nd 2009.
Finalists will also be asked questions on how well they know the character that they are cosplaying as.

For more information on the rules, regulations, and judging criteria, please view: http://www.afa09.com/afa_cosplay_championship_09.html
Once you have posted your entry, it may take a few hours to appear on the top page.

Prizes
Not only do you get the prestigious award of being SE Asia’s best, the top winner will also get a pair of Air Tickets to Japan + many other goodies! More details on this to be announced.

Take note of the highlighted phrase: Only one representative Cosplay team will be selected from each particular country, with the exception of Singapore, where the event will be hosted.

This smells like trouble to me, not only in our spectacularly chaotic local scene (how do we select the team?) but why does the host country get to field as many teams as it wants? Does anyone else have a problem with this?

Anyway, thanks to Magnetic Rose, official blogger affiliate of the Anime Festival Asia 09, for the details!

I’m also having a hard time trying to digest what merit the other representatives will have.

Anyhoo, a pure anime cosplay competition will be epic! Wish I could go.

Well, as usual, I will adopt a wait-and-see policy. Unfortunately if this country has taught us anything it’s that all the backstabbing, backroom politics, and secrecy is For Our Own Good™.

sounds like a recipe for trouble. what if you have like 10 or 20 groups wanting to compete from the philippines alone?

also without an actual preliminaries in the respective participating countries, it makes you think that only the people who are financially well off, have the opportunity to even try and compete for this event.

ah, but like you said, I guess we have to wait and see.

would it be better, kung restricted din for SG? I dunno, it’s kind of unfair we only get to send ONE while the host country gets to send MORE. oTL. Sana man lang 2 to 3 groups para mas maraming chances.

    And

I’m being my idealistic side here, so pardon me

I wanna join skurai for this .. there is individual right?

      Check out MagRose’s clarification here.

there will be one official pair would have their travel and accommodations paid for.. is it still that we can join the event by registering online? sorry i dont really get it and also is my pair gonna cosplay the same anime or manga im cosplaying?

        • otaking

Naw, MagRose said only one pair from each country aside from Singapore can join, although you are free to fly over and just mingle. But then that goes without saying… It’s not like they can turn you away at the entrance for being Filipino. You just can’t join.

I think we’ll be seeing about 100 Singaporean entries against 1 Filipino (and Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, etc.) entry. That pair representing each country had better be spectacular.
