Soapbox: Snobbery
by otaking on Jan.24, 2010, under Soapbox
So I ran across a public Plurk the other day that said:
“People who started later then me in WoW [World of Warcraft] are now higher level then me. ^^; Guess that’s the price of having a life. Good thing there’s a level cap.” (lol)”
News: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Trailer
by otaking on Dec.20, 2009, under News
Longtime readers know how ticked off I was about Haruhi’s Endless Eight fiasco. Even though KyoAni never reused animation throughout the arc, I kept thinking they were being cheap, lazy bastards, except I thought they were keeping the money for themselves.

Open Forum: What do people want from cons, anyway?
by otaking on Aug.10, 2009, under Open Forum
Considering the widely divergent opinions about last weekend’s Metro Comic Con 2009, especially in the comments section of my coverage of the event, I’ve been wondering, what exactly do people want out of conventions? I mean, there are the basics — spacious venue, good sound system, good marketing, good layout — but all those things together don’t seem to add up to a convention that everyone would like.
Interlude: Ode to a ’92 White Lancer GTi

They sold my car today.
It wasn’t my first car. My first car was a box-type Lancer, that I put up with in college. I wasn’t as fond of that car as I am of this one. The floor had rusted away, leaving holes that you could look through. Not so good when you’re driving in Metro Manila, when all it takes is a sudden rainstorm to cause traffic-stopping floods. It didn’t even have a stereo, so I made do by hooking up my Discman to battery-powered speakers. I learned the few jPop CDs I had by heart.
No, I remember the day I got my Warmachine, which is what the First Mate lovingly calls it. It was second-hand, bought from my dad’s best friend who was meticulous when it came to car care. White, gleaming, 1.8L engine under the hood. We’ve been through a lot together, my first date with my future wife, my first road trips with friends, my first court hearing. It was the car I would drive to Marikina in to rent anime. Good times, bad times, the Warmachine saw me through it all.
Manifesto XXIII: Change

LISTEN UP YOU WHINERS!
I have something to say to the following people, no matter who you are or what you’re into, like anime, or cosplay, or writing a novel, or starting a band, or traveling, or drawing a comic, or making your community a better place, or overthrowing the government, or ‘changing the world for the better’:
Manifesto XXII: Classic
by otaking on Jul.17, 2009, under Manifesto
I’m eating lunch at Sizzling Pepper Steak when the group of freshmen college kids from Ateneo at the next table start talking about what classic movies they’ve seen. The list is absolutely disheartening to me: The Matrix, Gladiator, The Truman Show. These are classics now?
But their love for the movies despite their ‘age’ is great. One of the boys tells his rapt female audience about the plot of the Truman Show in loving detail, remembering little plot points like Truman’s father being written off the show as ‘lost at sea’. “But the movie is kinda old na,” he qualifies, “nineties pa.”
I remember talking about Star Wars with my law school classmates and one of the girls said, “All I know about Star Wars is like, Yoda. That’s the little guy with the lightsaber, right?”

So, little guy with lightsaber am I?
Indeed.
