Interlude: Relearning Japanese

“Watashitachi wa kore kara shokudoo e ikimasu.”
We are going to the cafeteria now.
The fact that I had to mentally translate the above sentence piece by piece while reading it tells me how much my Japanese has slipped since college.
Ever since that painful conversation I tried to have with the elderly taxi driver in Kamakura, I’d always promised myself that I’d get back to studying Japanese. Traveling, watching anime, meeting new people, even talking with a client, I’d been struck by just how often a good grasp of Japanese would come in handy. (more…)
Manifesto IX: Life is Study!

People who know me from different periods in my life have wildly divergent opinions of me. People who’ve known me since childhood think I’m a genius. People from UP think I’m an evil slacker nerd. People from law school think I’m a weird loner at school who also happens to be fun at parties. So it’s not easy to find common ground about my personality traits except that I’m a weirdo.
If I had to point a particular trait out, though, it’s that I like to learn.
