Interlude: Ginza Station and Women’s Only Cars

One of the first things I noticed when I was in Tokyo was the lines for ‘women-only’ subway cars, for rush hour trains, particularly at busy stations like Ginza, Shinjuku, or Shibuya.

We made our way around a maze of escalators, colored lines, shops, vending machines, and a bewildering array of train platforms. We plotted our stops the day before, and now, bleary-eyed but excited, we waited for the first train on our way to Kamakura.

Outside my hotel window, Ginza gleams like a jewel of steel and glass. Train cars rush across the cityscape. Down in the street below, a biker rubs his hands and breathes on them before zipping up his jacket and setting off.
